Marcos Centeno-Martín

Marcos Centeno is lecturer in Media Studies for the Department of Theory of Languages and Communication Sciences. Before that, Centeno was Japanese Programme director for the Department of Cultures and Languages at Birkbeck, University of London, where he taught modules related to film and polítics, film and history, modern society and media in East Asia. Before that, he had been lecturer in Film Studies for the Department of Japan and Korea at SOAS, University of London where he coordinated the MA Global Cinemas and the Transcultural.
Centeno has served as guest lecturer at Pittsburgh University (USA), Ochanomizu University in Tokyo and Nanzan University in Nagoya. During his PhD studies, he was Research and Teaching Fellow at the University of Valencia (2009-2013) and Research Associate at Waseda University, Tokyo.
His main research interests revolve around Japanese Cinema, particularly documentary and theories around non-fiction formats, transnationality, memory of the war in Asia (1931-1945), representation of minorities, and postwar avant-garde. His most recent projects Japanese Documentary Filmmaker Haneda Sumiko. Authorship and Gender Discourses (2021-22) and Japanese Transnational Cinema (2018-19) were sponsored by several British and Japanese institutions.
