MARÍA JOSÉ BRUÑA BRAGADO

She is a professor of Hispanic American literature at the Universidad de Salamanca. She was a researcher and reader of Hispanic culture at Brown University. Later, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher and professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Paris 8, and l’Université de Neuchâtel (2003-2009).

Her main research area is the poetry and narrative of the Southern Cone from a gender studies perspective (Delmira Agustini, Juana de Ibarbourou, Ida Vitale, Idea Vilariño, Alejandra Pizarnik, Luisa Valenzuela, Marosa di Giorgio, Cristina Peri Rossi, Circe Maia). Additionally, she studies the exile of republican artists and creators from the Silver Age in Latin America (Maruja Mallo, Concha Méndez, Luisa Carnés, Delhy Tejero, Elena Fortún).
She has conducted several critical studies and coordinated collective volumes on 19th-century Hispanic American women writers, such as Cuando ellas cuentan. Narradoras hispánicas de ambas orillas (Relee, 2019) and Peregrinaciones de una paria (Relee, 2019), but mainly focuses on 20th-century authors (from modernism to the present), including Juana Adcock (Eolas, Anfitriones, 2021), Ida Vitale (Ediciones Universidad de Sevilla, Escritores del Cono Sur, 2021), and Gioconda Belli (Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca, 2023).

Between 2012 and 2014, she was a member of the project led by Professor Guillermo Mira Delli-Zotti: “Argentina: del ciclo de la violencia a la reconstrucción democrática: imaginarios culturales, conflictos políticos, memorias (1969-2009)” Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte, Reference: HAR2011 22721.

She has published the critical essays Delmira Agustini. Dandismo, género y reescritura del imaginario modernista (Peter Lang, 2005) and Cómo leer a Delmira Agustini. Algunas claves críticas (Verbum, 2008), as well as the monograph Manual de literatura infantil y juvenil. Guía libertaria de lecturas para niños (Síntesis, 2017).

She is currently researching the relationships between violence, gender, and literature in Latin America and Europe. A result of this research is her recent translation from Italian, accompanied by a study of the testimony from the Nazi extermination camp by Giuliana Tedeschi, Este pobre cuerpo (Eolas, Ursa Minor, 2023).

She is the deputy director of the Department of Spanish and Hispanic American Literature at the Universidad de Salamanca, where she has also coordinated cultural and literary activities related to Venezuela since 2018.
